Both are crushed stone mixed with fines. When you compact it, the fines fill the gaps and the whole layer locks up solid.
Crushed stone and fines that compact rock-solid. The standard base under driveways, pavers, paths and slabs.
Best for: driveways, paver bases, slabs, walkways
A lower-cost recycled base that compacts well for projects where the base won't be on display.
Best for: driveways, equipment pads, backfill
How Much to Order
Paver patios and walkways usually sit on 4 inches of compacted base, and driveways need more. One cubic yard covers:
81 sq ft
at 4 inches deep
54 sq ft
at 6 inches deep
41 sq ft
at 8 inches deep
Base shrinks as it compacts. Order roughly 20% more than your finished compacted depth, and call us if you want a second opinion on the numbers.
How It Works
1
Excavate to the base depth plus the thickness of your pavers or surface, and grade for drainage.
2
Spread base 2 to 3 inches at a time. Dampen each layer and compact it with a plate compactor before adding the next.
3
Use a string line to keep the final layer flat and properly sloped before you lay sand and pavers or concrete.

Is aggregate base the same as road base?
Yes. Aggregate base, road base, Class 2 base and AB are common names for the same kind of compactable crushed stone and fines.
What's the difference between Class 2 and recycled base?
Class 2 base is graded to Caltrans' Class 2 specification, the standard called for under driveways, slabs and pavers. Recycled base is crushed from reclaimed material and costs less, which makes it a good fit for driveways, pads and backfill.
Can I put pavers straight on dirt?
Not if you want them to last. Without a compacted base, pavers settle and shift. A base layer plus an inch of bedding sand is the standard method.
