Local Soil
Much of Elk Grove sits on San Joaquin soil, the official California state soil. The top few inches are a workable silt loam. Below that the subsoil turns to dense clay, and below the clay is a cemented hardpan, often just two to four feet down. Water can't drain through it, so roots sit wet all winter and stall out in summer.
The lower ground on the west side of town adds heavy Clear Lake and Galt clays. Those swell when they're wet and crack open when they dry.
Build up instead of digging down. Raised or mounded beds filled with growing soil give roots a foot or more of loose, draining soil above the clay.
For trees and shrubs, plant in a 50/50 topsoil blend and break through the hardpan at the bottom of the hole so water has somewhere to go. Skip mixing sand into clay. Unless you add a huge amount, it makes the soil harder, not softer.
For Elk Grove Yards
Fill raised and mounded beds so roots grow above the clay instead of in it.

What's the best soil for Elk Grove clay?
Don't try to fix the clay. Build on top of it. Fill raised or mounded beds with Mr. Good Stuff Growing Soil, use our 50/50 blend for trees and shrubs, and mulch with bark to keep the surface from cracking.
