Both are crushed to 3/4 inch with sharp, fractured faces, so they interlock and stay put far better than rounded stone.
The everyday workhorse. Angular gray rock for driveways, French drains, pipe bedding and base under pavers.
Best for: driveways, French drains, base, drainage
The same locking strength in a blue-gray tone that looks sharp in front yards and around modern homes.
Best for: driveways, drainage, decorative ground cover
How Much to Order
Drainage trenches and ground cover usually take 3 to 4 inches, and gravel driveways often go 4 inches or more. One cubic yard covers:
108 sq ft
at 3 inches deep
81 sq ft
at 4 inches deep
54 sq ft
at 6 inches deep
For a French drain, multiply trench length by width and depth in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Our calculator does the math for you.
How It Works
1
Dig out topsoil and grade the area so water runs off to the sides instead of pooling in the middle.
2
Lay and compact aggregate base in layers. A solid base keeps the surface from rutting under tires.
3
Spread crushed rock over the base and compact or drive on it to lock the stones together.

Crushed rock or pea gravel: which is better?
For anything that takes weight or sits on a slope, crushed rock. Its angular faces lock together. Pea gravel is rounded and shifts, so it's better for soft-surface paths and play areas.
Is crushed rock good for French drains?
Yes. 3/4 inch crushed rock is a standard choice for French drains because water flows easily through the gaps between stones.
What's the difference between crushed rock and aggregate base?
Crushed rock is clean stone without fines, so water drains through it. Aggregate base includes fines that compact into a dense, solid layer under driveways and pavers.
