Choose Your Blend

Three Blends for Every Planting Job

All three start with quality ingredients. Pick the one that matches what you're growing and how deep the roots go.

Mr. Good Stuff Growing Soil

Our all-around blend of Douglas fir, turkey manure, perlite and compost. Rich and dark, it holds moisture while draining freely.

Best for: raised beds, vegetables, flowers, pots

50/50 Topsoil Blend

River bottom loam blended half and half with Mr. Good Stuff. Denser than our straight soil, so it anchors larger plants.

Best for: trees, shrubs, hedges, boxwoods

Super Blend 420

Our specialty growing blend for home growers who want vigorous, healthy plants in beds and big containers.

Best for: home grows, large containers, raised beds

How Much to Order

How Much Soil Do You Need?

New beds usually need 6 to 8 inches of soil, and existing beds need a 2 to 3 inch top-up each season. One cubic yard covers:

162 sq ft

at 2 inches deep

54 sq ft

at 6 inches deep

27 sq ft

at 12 inches deep

A bag of Mr. Good Stuff holds 1.5 cubic feet, so 18 bags equal one cubic yard. Filling a 4 x 8 ft raised bed 12 inches deep takes about 1.2 yards, or 22 bags.

How It Works

Planting with Mr. Good Stuff

1

Loosen and amend

Break up the existing soil with a spade so new roots can push past the top layer, then water and let it settle.

2

Dig wide

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and loosen the roots. Fill around it with Mr. Good Stuff, tapping out air pockets.

3

Water deeply

Soak the area after planting. In Sacramento heat, water early in the morning and top with bark to hold moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's in Mr. Good Stuff Growing Soil?

Douglas fir, turkey manure, perlite and compost. The fir and perlite keep it loose and airy, while the manure and compost feed your plants.

Which blend should I use for trees?

The 50/50 topsoil blend. It's denser than straight growing soil, so it supports larger root systems for trees like pine, maple and redwood, plus shrubs and hedges.

Can I use growing soil in pots?

Yes. Mr. Good Stuff Growing Soil works in containers, hanging baskets, window boxes and planters as well as beds.

Is it cheaper to buy bags or bulk?

It depends on the job. 18 bags make a cubic yard, so for a raised bed or a few planters bags are easy, while bigger projects are usually cheaper by the yard. Call and we'll price both.
