Local Soil
Near the rivers, in the Pocket, Land Park, the Garden Highway and Natomas, the ground is river-deposited silt and sand. In the low basins that used to flood, especially around Natomas, it's heavy clay that cracks wide open in summer.
Away from the rivers, much of east and south Sacramento sits on older terraces with a clay subsoil and hardpan underneath. That's the same San Joaquin soil found in Elk Grove.
If you have clay or hardpan, build raised or mounded beds with growing soil, and mulch to stop the surface from crusting.
If you're near the river with sandy soil, the problem is the reverse: water drains straight through. Work in compost to help it hold water and nutrients.

My Natomas yard cracks every summer. What helps?
That's heavy basin clay drying out. Keep 2–4 inches of bark on bare soil, work compost into beds every year, and grow vegetables and flowers in raised beds filled with growing soil.
