Where It Works

What D.G. Is Good For

Decomposed granite is granite weathered down into small particles and fines. When you wet it and compact it, it forms a firm surface that still lets water soak in.

Paths & walkways

A smooth, natural surface that's easy to walk on and costs far less than concrete or pavers.

Patios & seating areas

Create a level spot for a bistro set or fire pit with a warm, earthy look that suits Sacramento yards.

Tree rings & borders

A tidy finish around trees and between plantings that keeps soil from washing onto walks.

How Much to Order

How Much D.G. Do You Need?

Walkways typically take about 3 inches of compacted D.G., and areas with more traffic go deeper. One cubic yard covers:

162 sq ft

at 2 inches deep

108 sq ft

at 3 inches deep

81 sq ft

at 4 inches deep

D.G. compacts as you water and tamp it, so order a little more than the finished depth you want.

How It Works

Installing a D.G. Path

1

Excavate and edge

Dig down 3 to 4 inches and install sturdy edging. Edging matters with D.G., because it keeps the edges from crumbling.

2

Lay in thin layers

Spread D.G. 1 to 2 inches at a time. Mist each layer with water and compact it with a hand tamper or plate compactor.

3

Finish and cure

Repeat until you reach finished depth, then let it dry and set for a couple of days before heavy use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does decomposed granite get muddy?

Well-compacted D.G. stays firm in normal weather. Very heavy rain can soften the surface, so grade it so water drains off rather than pooling.

Will D.G. track into the house?

Some fine particles can track on shoes, especially right after install. A doormat at the transition and good compaction cut this way down.

Can I use D.G. for a driveway?

Yes, with a compacted aggregate base underneath and good edging. Without a base, tires can rut the surface.

How is D.G. different from pea gravel?

Pea gravel is loose, rounded stone that crunches and shifts. D.G. compacts into a firm, nearly solid surface that's better for wheelchairs, strollers and patio furniture.
