Choose Your Rock

Color and Texture Without the Water Bill

Decorative rock replaces thirsty lawn with something that looks good all year and never needs mowing.

3/8" Salt & Pepper

Speckled black and white gravel with a clean, modern look. Fine enough to walk on comfortably.

Best for: walkways, modern yards, between pavers

Dolomite

Bright, light-colored stone that reflects sunlight and makes succulents and cacti stand out.

Best for: accents, rock gardens, cactus beds

1 1/2" Round Rock

Larger, smooth river-style rock with natural color variation. Heavy enough to stay put.

Best for: dry creek beds, borders, ground cover

How Much to Order

How Much Decorative Rock Do You Need?

Smaller gravels like salt & pepper go down 2 to 3 inches. Larger round rock usually needs 3 to 4 inches to cover the ground fully. One cubic yard covers:

162 sq ft

at 2 inches deep

108 sq ft

at 3 inches deep

81 sq ft

at 4 inches deep

Larger rock leaves bigger gaps, so plan on the deeper end of the range when you use 1 1/2 inch round rock.

How It Works

Turning Lawn into a Rock Garden

1

Remove the lawn

Cut out sod or smother it, then rake the area smooth. Plan where plants, boulders and paths will go.

2

Lay fabric

Cover the soil with landscape fabric and cut X-shaped holes where plants go. This keeps weeds from coming up through the rock.

3

Spread and plant

Spread rock to depth, plant drought-tolerant plants and add drip irrigation to each one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is decorative rock better than bark?

Rock doesn't break down or blow away and never needs replacing, which makes it great for low-water yards. Bark costs less up front, cools the soil and feeds it as it breaks down. Many yards use both.

Does light-colored rock get hot?

Light stone like dolomite reflects sunlight, which can bounce heat onto nearby walls and plants. Pick plants that love full sun and heat for those areas.

What rock is best for a dry creek bed?

1 1/2 inch round rock. Its smooth, river-style look reads as natural water flow, and it's heavy enough to stay in place during storms.

Can I see the rock before I buy?

Yes. Stop by our Elk Grove yard to see colors in person. Our Roseville yard keeps a limited selection, so call first to confirm what's in stock there.
