Local Soil
Rancho Cordova was built on gold country. Near the American River and across the newer areas east of Sunrise Boulevard, much of the ground is dredge tailings, the gravel and cobble left behind by gold dredges. It has almost no topsoil and very little ability to hold water.
Elsewhere, Redding gravelly loam and San Joaquin soils have a dense layer a few feet down that water can't get through. Either way, Rancho Cordova yards tend to dry out fast in summer.
Rocky, low-organic ground needs real soil brought in. Lay topsoil under new lawns, and fill planting beds with growing soil rather than trying to amend gravel.
Then mulch. A layer of bark over bare soil cuts evaporation and keeps roots cooler through Rancho Cordova's summers.
